Seconds Magazine – Vol 1

January 17th, 2011 by william | No Comments | Filed in New Zealand, magazine

Ex- Dunedinite Adrian Vercoe has not been idle during the Japanese winter, check out this online magazine that Adrian has produced using photos that didn’t make it to print, the majority donated to the cause by Jake Mein, but other New Zealand skateboarding photographers make guest appearances. A testament to the power of networking and the internet. Good Job!

New Zealand Skateboarding Magazines for Release in December

November 30th, 2010 by william | No Comments | Filed in New Zealand, magazine

December is a busy time for the New Zealand Skateboarding Magazine market, as the two national magazines go head to head for the dollars of skateboarders and advertisers.

Both New Zealand Skateboarder Annual and Manual have produced irresistible offerings, documenting the various New Zealand skateboarding icons and their associated cliques, to provide a taste of the New Zealand skateboarding scene.

First out is New Zealand Skateboarder Annual. It comes out yearly, is edited by Aucklander Mark Barber and covers skateboarding exclusively. He’s make a teaser featuring a sample of some of the content of the magazine. Some pretty stunning photos and the start of some articles, that look like a good read. The issue is due out on Thursday 2nd December and features interviews of Scott Lai, Nico Gottschalk, Deen Rakich and Gus Curwood, Adrian Vercoe on living in Japan, plus the Nationals, Aotea Square and some of Cade Wilson-Russ, Nick Snooks, Chad Hoskin and Joel Skelton.

Manual follows with a release date of Wednesday 8th December. It is based in Wellington and like NZ Skateboarder tries to cover the entire country. Coming out quarterly it subtitles itself as “Skateboarding / Snowboarding / Music / Art”, but by the time it reaches summer it’s mostly skateboarding. This issue features an interview of Adam Kinsman, an Irrom article, the New Zealand DVS and Lakai team touring Gisborne, Red Bull going on road trip, an article on Adam Wharekawa and a check out of new Barry Curtis Skate Park.

It also has Waikato’s Gemmell Brothers talking about their “New Morning” DVD and Oamaru’s Colin Evans talking about his “South in Your Mouth” DVD. With the issue you get from Skate shops and by Subscription you get both of these fine DVDs.

I’ve covered South in Your Mouth quite extensively elsewhere. New Morning is a Gemmell Brothers Production featuring Josh Gemmell, Scott Lai, LP Nuku, Simon Gemmell, Liam Gemmell, Dan Gemmell, Garth Urquhart, Judd Pollock and friends. The DVD features skateboarders from the Waikato, Bay of Plenty area.
