Although he didn’t win it in 2009, he went on to win the Street Section of the 2010 etnies European Skateboard Championship in Basel, Switzerland.

Best Commercial Winner Nestle Aero, with skating by Bob Burnquist.

The Best Documentary Winner was Skateistan: To Live and Skate Kabul. Skateistan is Afghanistan’s first co-educational skateboarding school. Here is the trailer for the film.

Another trailer from the Best Emerging Filmmaker, Dayman Cash for his video Symmetry.

Old Andrew Reynolds Clip – Baker Bootleg 1999

September 5th, 2010 by william | No Comments | Filed in USA, clip, video

Hyped up over Andrew Reynolds’ ender on Stay Gold? Here’s some footage from him when he was getting gold.

From the original 1999 Baker Bootleg video.

From SkimtheFat:
Following the release of Birdhouse The End, Jay Strickland (who was Birdhouse’s manager at the time) and Andrew Reynolds decided to develop an idea for their own team and company. Unhappy with the image of being at Birdhouse, the two shared sentiments about not identifying with the team and wanted to create something they felt better represented them and their crew of friends. Back then, a majority of their crew was living in Huntington Beach (the infamous Warner Ave. Mob). They hung out, skated together, filmed each other, threw the footage onto VHS tapes and suddenly, Baker was born. Bootleg represents the early days of the crew before they were actually considered a team.

Emerica – Stay Gold

August 23rd, 2010 by william | No Comments | Filed in USA, book, dvd, event, international, video

Here’s an interview at the Hollywood Stay Gold Premiere from FuelTV.
And another at the New York City Premiere of Stay Gold on KarmaloopTV.

Andrew “THE Boss” Reynolds comments on the Video.

Stay Gold features sections by Aaron Suski, Andrew Reynolds, Brandon Westgate, Braydon Szafranski, Jerry Hsu, Kevin Long, Bryan Herman, Ed Templeton, Leo Romero, Marquis Preston, Collin Provost, Justin Figueroa, Jamie Tancowny and Heath Kirchart (as an easter egg).

The Bonus has Andrews’s Madness – looking at his OCD, a feature on Ed’s Book in the Deluxe version, Emerica Europe flow sections, an International Montage and US riders who are on the flow program.

The DVD has hidden footage (easter eggs) of Heath Kirchart (from the chapter select menu, select “back to main” button, hit right arrow button once, hit enter) and the Barrier Cult (from the bonus menu, select “Andrew Madness” button, hit left arrow button once, hit enter).

Heath Kirchart has retired from skating in demos and videos, hence his reduced role in the video. His “hidden section” was a career summary rather than groundbreaking new footage. After the US premiere Justin “Figgy” Figueroa became pro for Baker.

Here’s Ed Templeton talking about the deluxe DVD set that includes a photographic book with 148 pages containing photographs of the Emerica team over the last ten years by Ed Templeton, Michael Burnett, Atiba Jefferson, and Mike O’Meally.

Some photos, with amusing comments from the Baker Boy’s Distribution blog on the Stay Gold World premiere.

Here are some of the product to go with that Stay Gold DVD. A Romero shoe…

… and my personal favourite the Reynolds 3 – Stay Gold.

There are six shoe styles available in the Stay Gold colourway.

Behind the Lens

July 8th, 2010 by william | No Comments | Filed in international, video

On the Transworld site they have been doing this “Behind the Lens” series. Being someone who occasionally films things and sometimes does photography, I’m always a sucker for this type of story.

The first pair is by Ricki Bedenbaugh who has filmed for Element and Oakley. On the second of the videos he talks about both Ryan Sheckler and Dave Bachinsky possibly getting injured doing their kickflips. I’m scared of that when I go to video/photograph people who are doing gnarly tricks, It’s such a good feeling when the trick is in the done and dusted. You’re aware that skaters need that sort of footage or photographs to make their way in the skateboarding industry, but it’s still hard not to be scared.

The next lot is by Chris Ray a filmer and editor of Transworld Skateboarding’s “Hallelujah”. To me these clips are another part of filming and photography, where clips mark a time and a place and the people you are with and always that “I hope I got it, and it looks good” feeling that was particularly strong with film, but less so now with digital.

Mountain Dew Code Red

June 29th, 2010 by william | No Comments | Filed in competition, editorial, video, web page

There is a vertical banner on the side of my blog that has google ads on it. I think I get paid for each click or something but normally they have nothing to do with skateboarding and I guess no one ever clicks on them anyway, because I’ve never seen any money from it. Well a while back there was a Mountain Dew Code Red banner and it looked interesting. I didn’t click it because that’s a violation of the terms of use, but there was a URL http://www.mountaindewcodered.co.nz so I typed it in.

It’s a site decked out like a flat that features three action sports athletes (“the Residents”), a prize room (“Gear Room”) and a TV with action sports videos (“Watch the Stunts”) on it. The action sports athletes are: wakeboarder Brad Smeeke, BMXer Haimona Ngata and skateboarding’s Brett Band. I always have two feelings when I see these sites, first I’m happy that a skateboarder has the opportunity to be on this sort of thing and that someone from outside is interested in skateboarding, but then I get disappointed because it’s too mainstream and thus a little cheesy.

Anyway here’s Brett’s footage on the “Watch the Stunts” section and a behind the scenes clip featuring all three “action sports stars”.

The site is pretty much done now and all the clips are up.

Here in New Zealand Code Red has a berry flavour, but in the US it’s cherry. In the States things have moved on as far as the flavours go, in addition to the CodeRed (Cherry), there is LiveWire (Orange) and Voltage (Raspberry, Citrus and Ginseng), as well as White Out (White-Colored Citrus) which is due out later this year.

Things have also moved on with the Green Label Sports too. In addition to the Dew Tour with footage here, Paul Rodriguez has a mini site. The tour must cost a bit to put on, and I doubt if it they would break even let alone make a profit. It’s cool that they have chosen to put money into our sport.

Another interesting feature on the US site is the “Green Label Art” Shop Series. Thirty-five skate shops across seven different regions in the US each created their own can design. Pretty cheesy, but it’d be cool to have your own can. Schidt colab.

Rodney Mullen has always been one of my favourite skaters. His autobiography The Mutt: How to Skateboard and Not Kill Yourself was an excellent read. Here is an article and interview in the digital edition of UK magazine Huck of the man who provided the basis for modern street skating…

… and here on Thrasher, “Ask The Phelper” with a Rodney Mullen interview clip. Part one.
